Since Mr. Jhoon Rhee introduced America to Tae Kwon Do in 1956, it has become the most popular martial art in the United States. Millions of adults and children enjoy this art and sport. Unlike what you might see in the movies, the martial arts are not just about kicking and punching (although the name Tae K won Do does literally mean "the way of kicking and punching"). They are excellent ways to develop discipline and self-confidence, especially among kids.

Bear in mind that different instructors take different approaches to Tae Kwon Do. Some emphasize the modem sport, others follow the traditional art form, while others take a more balanced approach between the two. You should thoroughly investigate any instructor before enrolling in a class. Talk to the instructor and to the other parents at the school, recreation center, or YMCA class. If the instructor won't allow you to watch a class, find one that will. Long-term financial contracts are another thing to be wary of. The most expensive lessons are not necessarily the best ones. Only until you find a good school and a good teacher should you then sign up.

Your children should find Tae Kwon Do training-fun, or else they won't want to do it. However, don't let anyone fool you, Tae Kwon Do is also hard work. But the benefits are well worth it. They include increased physical fitness, improved alertness, and a developed sense of respect for oneself and others.

We hope this book will give you a good beginning in Tae Kwon Do. It should not, however, replace the need of learning Tae K won Do from a qualified instructor. It is important to also note that all the techniques shown in this book should only be done when you are in Tae Kwon Do class or practicing at home. Do not use these techniques on anyone unless they are really trying to hurt you. Like all good martial artists, you should never use your skills unless you absolutely have to.

We want to thank all the young martial artists who helped us by posing for photos. We know they will be an inspiration to you and your children as you read this book.
